In the summer of 1995, after a thirty-year quest
to host the Olympic Winter Games, Utah was selected by the International
Olympic Committee as the site of the 2002 Winter Games.
The state of Utah has been busy preparing for the XIX Games that
will be held on February 8-24, 2002. Competition is scheduled
for seven sports in 70 medal events. An estimated 3,500 athletes
and officials from about Nations Olympic Committees are expected
to participate.

Tickets for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Olympic Arts and Culture
Program and the Paralympic Winter Games will go on sale in fall
of the year 2000. For the first time in Olympic history, tickets
to the Games in Salt Lake City will be available for purchase
through the Internet starting in October 2000. The committee organizing
the Games signed a deal with Tickets.com
to take orders online and to assign seats for the most popular
events by lottery. Phone orders are also available for those without
Web access. Prices will range from $20 to $465 per event, and
lottery winners will be notified by April 2001. Names not drawn
in the lottery will have a second shot at seats. In June 2001,
Tickets.com
will also host online auctions for up to 10% of the 800,000 tickets
available. Traditional box office sales start January 2002.
All venues are within a 10-60 minute drive from the Olympic Village.
Competition will occur at 10 Olympic venues with five city (indoor)
and five mountain (outdoor) facilities. Utahns and visitors alike
are already using the completed Olympic facilities, skiing on
the courses, skating the ice rinks and even trying out those jumps
for themselves!
The Olympic and Paralympic Village will be on the University of
Utah campus in Salt Lake City. Opening and Closing Ceremonies
will also take place at Rice Stadium on the campus.

The average temperature in the city February is 37.2 degrees Fahrenheit
(2.9 degrees Celsius). The average annual snowfall in the Wasatch
Mountains ranges between 300 to 500 inches.
